Step-by-step guide with required documents, timeline, tips, and common mistakes to avoid.
Make a comprehensive list of all streaming and digital subscription services by reviewing credit card and bank statements for the past 3 months. Common services to check for include: Netflix ($7 to $23/month), Hulu ($8 to $18/month), Disney+ ($8 to $14/month), Amazon Prime ($15/month or $139/year), HBO Max ($10 to $16/month), Spotify ($11 to $17/month), Apple Music ($11/month), YouTube Premium ($14/month), Audible ($15/month), Paramount+ ($6 to $12/month), Peacock ($6 to $12/month), and others.
If you have the account passwords, log in and cancel each service through the account settings. Most streaming services can be canceled online without calling. If you do not have passwords but have access to the deceased's email, use the "forgot password" feature to reset the password and then cancel. If you cannot access the account at all, call the service's customer support and explain the situation — most will cancel with proof of death.
If the deceased was the account holder on a family plan (Spotify Family, Apple Family Sharing, YouTube Premium Family, Netflix household), the other family members will lose access when the account is canceled. Before canceling, give family members time to set up their own individual accounts and migrate any saved playlists, watchlists, or purchased content. Some services allow you to transfer ownership of a family plan to another family member — ask customer support about this option.
